Our Counseling and Psychiatry Department provides essential therapy and emotional wellness services for students at the University of South Carolina. Learn more.

Telecouseling and Telepsychiatry  

If you need to make an appointment with a counselor or a psychiatrist, call our office at 803-777-5223 or make your appointment online via MyHealthSpace.  Services will be provided primarily through video or over the phone due to COVID-19.

Teletherapy and Telepsychiatry  

This fall, counseling and psychiatry services will be delivered primarily through video or over the phone to ensure physical distancing and reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 in our community. Due to this, in-person visits will be the exception at this time and will only be considered when the benefits outweigh the risks. As soon as it is possible, we will return to more traditional in-person services while continuing to offer videoconference and phone services.

Counseling & Psychiatry staff are all licensed, board certified and/or appropriately supervised mental health professionals in the State of South Carolina. For that reason, our services are legally limited to students residing here in South Carolina. Nonetheless, if you and your family have chosen to remain in another state, we will work with you to find appropriate support in your community.

Emergencies & After-Hours Crisis 

Please call Counseling & Psychiatry at 803-777-5223 after hours to speak with a counselor about urgent concerns. USC faculty and staff can also call at any time if they have concerns about a student. All Counseling & Psychiatry appointments can be canceled on MyHealthSpace. Get medication refills on My RX Space. Someone will follow up with you on the next business day if necessary.

Walk-In Sessions

We are offering virtual crisis walk-in appointments. Please call 803-777-5223 to access. 
In-person crisis walk ins are offered when necessary, please call 803-777-5223 before you arrive to help us manage physical distancing.

Our Services

Individuals

Work one-on-one with a trained and licensed mental health provider to work toward growth and self improvement in a safe and confidential environment.

Couples

Available for all intimate relationships regardless of sexual orientation or identity to help couples strengthen their relationships, address a specific concern or get pre-marital counseling. One partner must be an enrolled USC student eligible for counseling services.

Group Counseling 

Find encouragement, understanding and support from others facing similar issues. Students meet in groups of six to ten with one or two trained therapists.

Community Support After a Trauma

When the Carolina campus community experiences the death of a student, staff or faculty member or other traumatic event, we organize community support meetings. These support meetings are a chance for those affected to gather together and support one another. 

Online Counseling

Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) is a seven-week to nine-week program split into daily homework, weekly exercises of 30 – 40 minutes and a weekly 10 – 15 minute video consultation with a counselor.

Our providers can help with psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis and treatment recommendations for mental, emotional and behavioral problems. Your psychiatric provider can prescribe medications if needed and arrange for ongoing monitoring and coordination with other health care professionals.

Relaxation and Biofeedback

EmWave Biofeedback teaches deep relaxation skills to help you see how your heart rate responds to relaxation strategies. Biofeedback is a useful way to manage anxiety, stress or sleep problems.

C.A.L.M. Oasis Space 

Come to the C.A.L.M. Oasis for mindfulness and meditation, either through open practice or to participate in open learning coordinated by a trained facilitator. All are welcome.

Stress Management

Many students face above average stress at one time or another during their time on campus. We can help you identify your stressors and find techniques that work for you to decrease stress.

Therapy Assistance Online (TAO), Interactive Screening Program and Kognito

We offer online resources for students to get help for common concerns 24/7, take a free, anonymous mental health screening and learn how to recognize signs of psychological distress to help a friend in need.

Refer Someone to Counseling

If you're concerned about a USC student, call us at 803-777-5223. We can help you determine what to do and how to help the student.

Consultations

We provide consultations for all members of the USC community (including faculty, staff, students, family members and friends) who need help talking to or assisting a struggling student. 

 

Warning Signs

Express concern, listen, avoid criticizing and recommend a student to counseling if you notice a change in behavior that indicates distress or emotional trouble:

  • Increased alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawal from family, friends and society
  • Decrease in quality of schoolwork
  • Infrequent class attendance
  • Significant changes in personal hygiene
  • Excessive weight gain or weight loss
  • Comments that suggest thoughts about hopelessness or self-harm

Practice Recognizing the Signs
You can use the online program Kognito to learn the signs of psychological distress in others and to practice getting someone else the help they need. Use the code "usccolumbia" when you register.
